WHO ARE WE?

There are places where the past and present converge to write stories together. Maubuisson Abbey is one such place.

  • L’Abbaye de Maubuisson : Dialogue entre patrimoine et art contemporain

Founded in the 13th century by Blanche of Castile in the heart of a 10-hectare wooded park, this former Cistercian abbey, owned by the Val d’Oise Department, is now a contemporary art centre where heritage and artistic creation interact. The story-filled walls encourage the emergence of original works created in situ that resonate with the spirit of the place.  As part of the cultural policy promoted by the Department, Maubuisson Abbey affirms its vocation as a place of creation and artistic encounters. Each exhibition is the result of a period of exchange and sometimes residency, during which the artist immerses themselves in the history and atmosphere of the site to imagine works designed for this unique setting.  These creations transform the perception of heritage. They reveal unexpected details, tell different stories about the space and invite visitors to explore it in a sensitive and intuitive way. Through them, the abbey is rediscovered with each passing season.

Throughout the year, a cultural programme accompanies the exhibitions: guided tours, workshops for young children and adults, meetings with artists, and projects with schools, social and health institutions. These are all opportunities to forge links between the local residents of the Val d’Oise, the heritage and contemporary art.

Here, time hangs suspended, inviting us to see differently, listen, feel… and leave with a new perspective on the world around us.
